Louis Morgan name now on 2 local stores

The late Louis Morgan started in the independent pharmacy business in 1952, opening his first drugstore at 1900 S. High St. Over the years, he grew the number of stores to five.

Only two stores remain: the original store and Louis Morgan Drug No. 4, which opened in 1969 at 110 Johnston St. The two stores have separate ownership. Pharmacist Cheryl Gilliam and husband, James, own the store on High Street, and pharmacists Mike Holbert and Shawn Sams own the one on Johnston Street.

The Louis Morgan No. 2 store at Alpine Road and Marshall Avenue merged with No. 4 about 10 years ago; No. 3 in Greggton closed in 1967, and No. 5 in Overton closed two years ago, Holbert said.
