Fantasy Football: My wife, fantasy guru

I am lucky.

I married well.

My friends and colleagues, like Bill Coates from KTBB Radio in Tyler, jokingly say I ‘outkicked my coverage’ when my wife Jana agreed to marry me nine years ago.

Jana is an avid sports fan while also being just as versed in the Real Housewives of wherever.

And she also loves fantasy football.

No, she doesn’t play, but considers herself a co-owner/general manager of my team, the Last Action Heroes.

While many other owners in the Dereliction league have wives who don’t care about why their husbands are distraught or over-the-moon each weekend regardless of how the Cowboys do, my wife gets it.

An example: A few years ago I had Marvin Harrison as one of my receivers in the prolific Indianapolis Colts offense. In our house we have two televisions with me controlling the 65-inch big screen with the NFL Sunday Ticket in the living room while Jana alternates between watching football in the living room and something else in the bedroom.

The Cowboys are on, but I am concerned with the Colts game right now to see if Harrison is going to do something for me. Manning drops back to pass and launches a bomb that is caught in the back corner of the end zone by — Colts receiver Reggie Wayne. Right around the same time this is happening I hear my wife in the bedroom scream, “Yes! … No!”

See what I mean about marrying well.

Well, Jana is becoming more and more versed in fantasy football and last year before the draft she finally decided to give me a suggestion.

“Chris, I think you should draft that Gronkowski guy from the New England Patriots. I’ve been seeing highlights for preseason and Tom Brady throws to him a lot,” she said.

I listened to her, said that might be cool to do and completely forgot what she said by the time I headed off for the draft.

Well, you know what happened. Gronkowski finishes with a season for the ages (90 receptions for 1,327 yards and 17 TDs) and I received none of those points.

So, it’s a couple weeks into this season and my team is not performing well — especially at wide receiver/tight end. I recently had acquired stud receiver Julio Jones from the Atlanta Falcons, but Jana suggested I also pick up Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller, who is on the waiver wire.

I already have Michael Wallace, but am not going to make the same mistake this year as last. It’s a reach, but I do it.

Miller has scored 75 points and been one of my most consistent players, but I took him out of my lineup last week.

Jana did not agree that I do that but I did it anyway — and that nearly cost me.

I had a big lead against Crushers and all he had left was Shonn Green of the N.Y. Jets, the Patriots defense and receiver Stephen Hill of the Jets. I still had the Jets defense, Miller and Wallace from the Steelers, who were playing that night. I get cocky and decide this would be a great time to see if Justin Blackmon, receiver for Jacksonville, can break out against the Raiders.

Blackmon provided me a zero.

The Jets were not much better.

Meanwhile, the Crushers caught up and passed me meaning Wallace had to do something or I was toast.

Wallace kept dropping passes while Jana kept looking at me with the “I told you so” look. Meanwhile, Miller scored a touchdown and had a solid game. If I would’ve played Miller I already would’ve had the game wrapped up, but I had to wait until deep in the second half before Wallace acquired just enough points to give me a 113-109 win and three-game winning streak.

Maybe I’ve learned my lesson?

Probably not.

MORE BYE WEEK AND INJURY WOES FOR OWNERS, BUT HERE ARE SOME RB, QB SOLUTIONS

When Maurice Jones went down with an injury, backup Rashad Jennings did okay and scored a touchdown. He should be the No. 1 waiver-wire claim for those in need of running backs. Several teams are on a bye this week, so Arian Foster owners like me are scrambling for replacements. A few running backs to look at:

Pierre Thomas, New Orleans — He hasn’t been great, but is still a viable back in this offense. Darren Sproles gets a lot of the love, but Thomas has 214 yards rushing and a TD while also catching 13 passes for 139 yards. He is also the guy New Orleans turns to on the goal line.

Marcel Reese, Oakland — Another non-flashy name who is the second option to Darren McFadden, but Reese has become a favorite receiving target for quarterback Carson Palmer (four receptions for 58 yards last week in addition to a rushing TD). Again, not monster numbers, but anything is better than having a zero in the column.

Also Felix Jones is slated to start for the Cowboys, but I picked up Phillip Tanner (Reese and Thomas were not on waiver wire in Dereliction League). Jones never seems to stay healthy and Tanner should get the goal line carries for the Cowboys this week as Demarco Murray has already been ruled out.

For those Joe Flacco owners, I have a bye week quarterback for you — Sam Bradford. Bradford and the Rams are facing the New England Patriots, who have been a goldmine for quarterbacks this season. The last five QBs to face the Patriots have thrown for 382, 350, 337, 293 and 328 yards. Here’s the punchline: the last two of those QBs were Mark Sanchez (328 yards, TD) and Russell Wilson (293 yards, 3 TDs).

In closing: Go get Bradford off the waiver wire to play for you this week.
