Royse City edges Red Raiders in eight innings

The Red Raiders scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but Royse City plated one run in the eighth for a 5-4 win over Tyler Legacy on Tuesday in a District 10-6A baseball game at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Mike Carter Field.


The Bulldogs improved to 15-4 overall and 4-1 in district, despite garnering just one hit. The Red Raiders fell to 11-9 and 3-2.

Royse City scored four runs in the first inning before Tyler Legacy rallied for two runs in the second inning and two in the seventh. The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth.

Garner McKinney led the Red Raiders with two hits, including a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.

Payne Hotman also had two hits for Tyler Legacy along with Simeon Garner, Dallas Walker and Owen Harrison.

Adding RBIs were Hotman (1), Cale Zips (1) and Nolan Hable (1).

Others scoring runs for Legacy were Jaden Davis (1) and Harrison (1).

Sophomore Davis started on the Hill for the Red Raiders, going five innings, while allowing one hit and four runs with six walks and four strikeouts. Zips pitched two innings (0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 0 strikeouts. Calvin Rippy pitched the eighth (0 hits, 1 unearned run, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts).

Regan Williams got the win on the mound for the Bulldogs, going 1.2 innings (1 hit, 0 runs, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts). Peyton Peoples was the starting pitcher, hurling 6.1 innings (6 hits, 4 runs, 4 walks, 4 strikeouts).

Alex Nevarez had the one hit for the Bulldogs. He knocked in three runs. Harrison Hickey and Eli Snow, who has committed to play at Tyler Junior College, had RBIs.

Scoring runs were Williams (2), Brayden Langham (1), Peyton Peoples (1) and Hickey (1).

The two squads will play again on Friday in Royse City. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Next week, the Red Raiders play Longview — April 1 in Longview (7 p.m.) and April 4 in Tyler (7 p.m.).
