LUFKIN — Ben Reed smashed a second inning grand slam in helping lead the Whitehouse Wildcats to an 11-2 win over the Lufkin Panthers on Friday in a District 10-5A baseball game at Lufkin HS Athletic Complex.

Whitehouse (12-5, 3-0) stayed perfect in district by ending Lufkin’s six-game winning streak while handing the Panthers (8-6, 1-1) their first district loss.

Reed, who added a bases-clearing triple in the seventh inning, finished the night with a homer, double and seven RBIs.

Lufkin sophomore shortstop Grant Stafford had two solo homers as well as a single and two RBIs. However, the rest of the Lufkin lineup only mustered a pair of singles against a trio of Whitehouse pitchers.

Mason Johnson got the win, allowing one earned run on four hits with four walks in 2 2/3 innings. Lufkin had its best scoring opportunities against Johnson but left eight runners on base through the first three innings.

After that, Josh Cowart and Winn Harriss slammed the door. Cowart allowed an earned run on a hit in 1 1/3 innings. Harriss pitched the last three innings, allowing two hits and no walks.

Miguel Flores took the loss for Lufkin, pitching the first 1 2/3 innings. Rocco Farrell and Francisco Serrano kept Lufkin within striking distance by combining for 3 1/3 innings before Whitehouse broke it open with a four-run seventh inning.

In the first inning, Hunter Cook came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single and Caleb Russell delivered an RBI single that made it 3-0.

Mack Slaton hammered a ball to deep center, but J.J. Idrogo tracked it down to keep Whitehouse with a two-run lead.

The game stayed 7-2 until the seventh inning when Reed hit a three-run double and Tye Davis hit an RBI triple that made it 11-2.
