Softball Notebook: Brook Hill’s Miller, Troup’s Longino take weekly honors

Brook Hill’s Karmen Miller and Troup’s Heather Longino have earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Softball Player of the Week honors for games played March 31-April 5.

Miller is the Pitcher of the Week, and Longino is the Hitter of the Week.


Miller struck out 23 batters and reached 706 career strikeouts in a doubleheader sweep of rival Grace Community.

Miller threw a perfect game in the opener with 10 strikeouts in five innings in the 10-0 victory. In the nightcap, Miller allowed five runs — three earned — on four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks in five innings in a 23-5 victory. Miller also had two hits in the last game with a triple, five RBIs and four runs scored.

Longino, a freshman, went 5-for-6 (.833) with a home run, two triples, a double and two RBIs.

PITCHING

Whitehouse’s Taylor Morris went 1-0, allowing one unearned run on three hits with nine strikeouts and four walks in six innings.

Bullard junior Brooklyn Brannen posted a 0.00 ERA with 11 strikeouts in five innings.

Troup senior Taylor Gillispie picked up two wins, posting a .636 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 11 innings.

Arp’s Addison Carpenter posted a .000 ERA with six strikeouts in four innings in a win over Sabine.

HITTING

Whitehouse’s Shilee Yutterman went 2-for-3 (.667) with two home runs, three RBIs and two runs.

Bullard junior Kirstin Malone went 3-for-4 (.750) with a home run, three RBIs and three stolen bases.

Brook Hill’s Menah Harley went 6-for-8 (.833).

Arp’s Lacy Fletcher went 6-for-7 (.857) with three doubles, four RBIs and four runs.

East Texas teams ranked in the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings are Hallsville No. 14 and Lufkin No. 16 in Class 5A; Bullard No. 5, Gilmer No. 17 and Van No. 20 in 4A; Arp No. 8, Hughes Springs No. 10, Huntington No. 14, Hooks No. 16, Troup No. 17 and DeKalb No. 18; and Timpson No. 11, Detroit No. 13, Corrigan-Camden No. 16, Groveton No. 19, Joaquin No. 21 and Maud No. 22 in 2A/1A.
