Softball Notebook: Bullard’s Brannen, Mineola’s Wilson, McMahon take weekly honors

Bullard’s Brooklyn Brannen and Mineola’s duo of Journie Wilson and Mahayla McMahon have earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Softball Player of the Week honors for games played March 24-29.
Brannen is the Pitcher of the Week, and Wilson and McMahon are the hitters of the week.
Brannen pitched eight innings, allowing no runs on two hits with 16 strikeouts and one walks.
Brannen pitched two innings in a 20-1 win over Center, allowing no runs on one hit with four strikeouts and two walks. She then threw six shutout innings in a 6-0 win over Sulphur Springs, allowing one hit with 12 strikeouts and a walk.
Wilson and McMahon helped power Mineola to wins over Edgewood and Eustace.
Wilson hit .571, hitting three home runs with a triple and six RBIs. Wilson hit a solo home run in the 15-4 win over Edgewood. On Friday, she hit two homers to left field in a 21-1 victory over Eustace.
McMahon hit .444, hitting two home runs with two doubles and eight RBIs. With Mineola trailing 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning, McMahon’s two-run home run gave the Lady Jackets the lead for good. On Friday, she delivered a three-run home run to center.
In other outstanding performances in the area last week (nominated by coaches):
PITCHING
Canton junior Rylee Busby went 2-0, allowing four runs with 20 strikeouts in 12 innings.
Arp’s Addison Carpenter pitched five innings, posting a 0.00 ERA with two hits, two strikeouts and one walk.
Mineola’s Journie Wilson allowed one unearned run in five innings.
Brook Hill’s Karmen Miller posted a 2.00 ERA and had 19 strikeouts.
HITTING
Tyler Legacy’s Sophia Viramontes was 2-for-3 (.667) with a double, an RBI and a run in a loss to Rockwall-Heath.
Bullard senior Baylie Walker hit 1.000 with a home run, a double, a single and five walks.
Canton junor Chloe Howe went 6-for-6 (1.000) with two triples, a double, seven RBIs, four runs, a hit by pitch and two stolen bases.
Rusk’s Aubrey Hassell hit .600 with two home runs, seven RBIs and two runs.
Arp’s Lacy Fletcher went 4-for-4 (1.000) with four RBIs and two runs.
Mineola’s Caroline Castleberry hit .778 with five singles, two doubles, three RBIs and six runs. Katilyn McMahon hit .571 with four singles and two RBIs.
Brook Hill’s Blair Brister hit .333.
East Texas teams ranked in the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings are Hallsville No. 15 and Lufkin No. 17 in Class 5A; Bullard No. 5, Gilmer No. 11, Carthage No. 22 and Van No. 23 in 4A; Arp No. 12, Hughes Springs No. 15, Hooks No. 18, Troup No. 19, Mount Vernon No. 20, DeKalb No. 21 and Huntington No. 24 in 3A; and Corrigan-Camden No. 10, Timpson No. 13, Detroit No. 15, Maud No. 17 and Groveton No. 23 in 2A/1A.
