Baseball Notebook: Whitehouse’s Ben Reed, Grand Saline’s Landon Mayne take weekly honors

Whitehouse’s Ben Reed and Grand Saline’s Landon Mayne have earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Baseball Player of the Week honors for games played March 17-22.

Reed was selected as the Hitter of the Week, and Mayne was chosen as the Pitcher of the Week.


Reed went 5-for-8 (.625) with two inside-the-park home runs, eight RBIs, five runs and four stolen bases in wins over Nacogdoches and Tyler.

Reed also homered in a March 15 game against Lufkin to give him three straight games with a home run for the Wildcats. Reed is second in the state in RBIs with 31.

Mayne, a senior, threw a no-hitter in a 14-0 win over Mineola. Mayne struck out 14 batters and walked one in the six-inning victory.

PITCHING

Tyler Legacy’s Calvin Rippy pitched six innings, allowing no runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk on 67 pitches in six innings in a win over North Forney.

Whitehouse senior Winn Harriss threw a no-hitter against Nacogodches with eight strikeouts and three walks. Harriss is in the top 10 in the state in strikeouts.

Lindale sophomore Jackson LeGrow threw a no-hitter against Brownsboro. LeGrow had six strikeouts and allowed two walks in seven innings.

Van’s Grady Baetz picked up a win, allowing two earned runs with 10 strikeouts in six innings.

Grand Saline senior Carson Brown allowed two unearned runs on three hits with one walk in six innings in a 12-2 win over Mineola.

Arp’s Caden Cliborn pitched a complete game against White Oak, allowing three earned runs with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Quitman junior Davis Watson threw a two-hit shutout in a five-winning win over Winona, striking out 14 batters in 15 outs recorded.

HITTING

Van’s Connor McCurley went 5-for-8 (.625) with three doubles, an RBI and a run.

Arp’s Will Sanford went 3-for-8 (.375) with three doubles, an RBI and a run.
