Spring is the perfect time to explore East Texas gardens, and the Smith County Earth-Kind Environmental Education Committee is offering a unique opportunity to experience one of Tyler’s most beautiful private gardens. On Tuesday, March 25 beginning at 10 a.m., I’ll be leading an exclusive Spring Garden Tour of the Pyron Garden in the heart of Tyler’s historic Azalea District.

This is a rare opportunity to walk through a private garden that has been carefully cultivated to highlight plants perfectly suited for East Texas’s unique growing conditions.

The Pyron Garden, located at 212 West Dobbs Street, is a stunning example of how to create a thriving East Texas landscape. The well-maintained garden showcases a wide variety of azaleas and other ornamental plants suited to our region’s climate and soil. From vibrant azalea blooms to lush shade plants, the Pyron Garden reflects the thoughtful care and planning of its owner, Joan Pyron. The Pyron Garden is a highlight of Tyler’s renowned Azalea Trail, known for its impressive display of spring blooms and historic iron ore hardscape.

The tour will include my experienced commentary on plant selection, care, and maintenance. As we walk through the garden, I’ll share insights on growing azaleas and other Southern favorites, as well as tips for dealing with East Texas soil and weather challenges. We’ll discuss the unique varieties of azaleas, including Southern Indicas, Kurumes, and deciduous hybrids while highlighting other plants that thrive in East Texas gardens. This is a great opportunity for new and experienced gardeners to gain practical knowledge about creating a beautiful landscape using Earth-Kind® principles.

The Pyron Garden is not only beautiful but also a valuable learning experience for gardeners looking to improve their own landscapes. The carefully curated plantings and thoughtful design offer inspiration and ideas that can be applied to other home gardens. The Pyron’s success in creating a vibrant garden that thrives in East Texas conditions is a testament to good plant selection, soil preparation, and proper maintenance.

The cost is $21 per person, and payment must be made in advance. Registration is non-refundable, and the tour will take place rain or shine, so dress appropriately for the weather.
