Whitehouse freshman Becerra named to first team on 5A state softball

Whitehouse freshman Analee Becerra earned first team honors with the release of the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association Class 5A All-State Softball Team on Thursday.

Voting was conducted by TSWA members based on nominations from coaches and media members from around the state.

Becerra was selected as a designated player. She hit .481 with nine home runs, eight doubles, four triples, 43 RBIs, 17 walks and 10 stolen bases.

Whitehouse teammate Kate Jones was a second team selection at second base. Jones hit .422 with 35 hits, one home run, one double, four triples, 17 RBIs, 40 runs, 23 walks and 35 stolen bases.

Mount Pleasant outfielder Ella Cross earned first team honors and teammate Jordan Bachelor was a third team pick as a utility player.

Cross hit .505 for the season with five home runs, four triples, four doubles, 31 RBI, 15 stolen bases and 41 runs scored. Batchelor hit .418 with 11 doubles, two triples and 40 RBI and was also 10-5 as a pitcher with a 3.42 earned run average and 91 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched.

Honorable mention picks from the area included third baseman Grace Ann McDonald of Whitehouse, outfielder Cami Laney of Whitehouse, pitchers Taylor Burkhart of Pine Tree, Lindsey Dubberly of Hallsville and Conlee Zachry of Mount Pleasant, catchers Laney Schroeder of Pine Tree and Sara Houston of Hallsville, shortstop Mo Rougely of Pine Tree and DP/DH/Flex Audrey Jones of Hallsville.

McDonald hit .457 with 14 home runs, 10 doubles, 50 RBIs, 27 runs, 16 walks and three stolen bases. Laney hit .339 with two home runs, three triples, three doubles, 15 RBIs, 23 runs and 11 stolen bases.

State champion Melissa earned the classifications top two honors.

Caigan Crabtree was named Player of the Year, and Cassie Crabtree earned Coach of the Year honors.

Caigan Crabtree, a former student at Van ISD who is committed to the University of Texas, went 5 for 7 with a pair of home runs and seven RBIs in two games at the University Interscholastic League state tournament to earn tournament MVP honors.

For the season, she was a .545 hitter with 21 home runs, 20 doubles, two triples, 61 RBI and 21 stolen bases.

Cassie Crabtree, the former head coach at Van High School and assistant coach at UT Tyler, led Melissa to a 38-2-1 record. Her team defeated Lake Belton (4-0) in the state semifinals and knocked off Harlingen South (8-0) in the championship game.
