Texas High, Lufkin top 5A regional

ROCKWALL — Texas High and Lufkin lead after the first round on Monday of the Class 5A Region II Golf Tournament at Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club.
The second and final round is Tuesday. The top three teams and top three players not on the top three teams advance to the state tournament.
Texas High, led by Grayson Jones’ 69, has a team total of 303. Garrett May and Reese Nichols added scores of 75 and 78, respectively, for the Tigers.
Lufkin, paced by four golfers in the 70s, is second at 305. Marco Maldonado (75), John Portwood (76), David Griffin (76) and Cole Goodson (78) paced the Panthers.
Sulphur Springs is third at 310, followed by Frisco (313), Frisco Legacy A (314) and McKinney (315). Lindale is 12th with a 337.
Texas High’s Jones and Frisco’s Brandon Smith are tied for the medalist lead with 69s. Sulphur Springs’ Garrett Landers is third at 70. McKinney’s Spencer Dillard is fourth at 73, followed by Jacksonville’s Cameron Brown (74) and Wylie’s Carson Horak. Tied for seventh with 75s are Longview’s Reed Fisher, Lufkin’s Maldonado, McKinney’s Garrett Kelley, Mansfield Lake Ridge’s Brendon Lowrance, Waxahachie’s Paul Gonzalez, Texas High’s May, Carrollton Creekview’s Kyle Cox and Frisco’s Chase Ybarra.
Lindale was paced by Evan White’s 78. Other Eagle golfers are Dylan Sims (85), Garrett White (86), Ethan Puckett (88) and Mason Waldron (106).
