EDINBURG, Texas (AP) — A grand jury has indicted a former Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputy on bribery charges.
Court records show 39-year-old Michael Lee Serrano of Mercedes is charged with intentionally and knowingly soliciting and agreeing to accept a benefit. Serrano is accused of soliciting sexual contact from a woman in January 2014 in exchange for his help in getting a bail bond and/or helping with a criminal case against her.
Spokesman Cmdr. Joel Rivera for the sheriff’s office says an internal investigation was conducted into the claims against Serrano. Rivera says Serrano, a 10-year veteran of the agency, was fired for several policy violations discovered during the investigation.
It wasn’t immediately known if Serrano has an attorney. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 7.
