Former Chief Judge Leonard Davis, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, housed in the William M. Steger Federal Building in downtown Tyler, will join an area patent law firm in May.

Davis has served on the bench since 2002 and as Chief Judge between 2012 to early 2015. He has handled more than 1,700 individual cases involving intellectual property law.

He will join Fish & Richardson law firm, a global patent, intellectual property litigation and commercial litigation firm. The firm has been the No. 1 patent litigation firm in the U.S. for 11 consecutive years.

Davis said in a statement the firm is the best fit for him.

“Since announcing that I would be retiring from the bench, I have considered several options for the next chapter in my career,” Davis said in a statement. “I am excited about this opportunity with Fish & Richardson. I have seen them in court for years exhibit the highest caliber of ethics and legal representation of their clients.”
