UT Tyler stays undefeated, sweeps LeTourneau

The No. 4-ranked UT Tyler softball team improved to 20-0 on the season on Saturday, sweeping an American Southwest Conference doubleheader against LeTourneau in Longview.

The Patriots, 12-0 in league play, scored 9-1 and 4-0 wins. The Yellowjackets fell to 9-13 and 4-10.


In the first game, Kelsie Batten tossed a two-hitter as she improved to 12-0 in the circle.

Christa Hartnett had three hits, while Shelby Shelton, Vanessa Carrizales, KK Stevens and Whitney Burt each had two hits for the Patriots.

Leading 3-1 in the sixth, the Patriots totaled six hits and scored six runs. Stevens, Burt, Lexi Ackroyd, Hartnett and Carrizales had the singles, while Raven Rodriguez had a double to left center.

Hartnett and Ackroyd each had two RBIs, while Rodriguez, Shelton, Carrizales and Stevens each had an RBI.

In the second game, Alaina Kissinger (8-0) and Abby Walker combined for the shutout. Kissinger struck out 10 in 6 2/3 innings and allowed just four hits. Walker got the save with the final out.

Stevens belted a home run and a double for the Patriots, while Carrizales and Shelton had doubles.

The Patriots have now won 20-straight games to start the season, the second most behind the 2008 team which won its first 24 games.

UT Tyler will now prepare for the big series against rival and No. 3-ranked East Texas Baptist (13-0, 11-0) as they play a three-game series beginning on Monday in Marshall. There is a single game set for 6 p.m. Monday. A doubleheader is scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
