Jonathan Groff was his usual stellar self on the mound Saturday night, but this time he was even better.
Groff, a Tyler Junior College freshman lefty, tossed a no-hitter while striking out 10 in the Apaches’ 7-0 win over Coastal Bend College at Mike Carter Field.
The Castroville native walked three in helping the Apaches sweep the Cougars in a Region XIV Conference game. TJC (19-4, 2-0) won the first game 13-0.
TJC belted out nine hits in the second game with Tim Hunter and Zane Ancell both 2 for 4 with an RBI apiece. Brandon Webb added a hit and two RBIs, while Zane Otten, Aaron Clemons and Derek Clemons each had singles. Otten also had an RBI as did Jacob Hickman. Reid Russell contributed a triple.
In the first game, Jace Vines was a standout on the mound as well. The freshman right-hander from Prosper struck out six, did not walk a bater and gave up six hits.
The Apaches had 14 hits in the second game, led by Russell’s 3 for 3 outing with two RBIs. He also had a double. Gunnar Quick was 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI. Otten (3 RBIs) and Ancell (2 RBIs) each had two hits.
Derek Clemons was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, while Hunter, Aaron Clemons and Alex Masotto each had singles. Hickman added an RBI.
The Apaches and Cougars are scheduled to play again Sunday, beginning at noon.
