Free throw skills used to raise money

Tom Booth of Chandler started Free Throws for Souls in 2011 because he wanted to find a way to use his talents to help others.
The front of the shirt Booth wore Friday said, “Shoot till my arm falls off,” which he did (shooting, not losing his arm) from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m.
Booth is a former high school and college basketball player, and with very little advertising he raised $6,000 the first time out. In 2012, $11,000 was raised. In 2013 he raised $20,000, and last year he raised $14,025.
Donations this year will go to God’s Open Hands, a food pantry in Chandler which feeds over 1,000 people each month, along with Chandler Project Transformation, an event where the local youth groups com together to help local residents in need. Last year over 100 youths came together to help build wheelchair ramps and clean up yards. They performed work at more than 21 local area sites in one weekend.
Three $1,000 scholarships will go to selected graduating seniors to go towards their college education.
