Book Fest seeking authors

The East Texas Book Fest is seeking authors for this year’s event, which is scheduled for Aug. 21-22. Authors in any genre are welcome to apply.

The event will be at a new location this year — the Harvey Convention Center — and offer two days worth of activities instead of one.

The first day will focus on learning with seminars about topics such as literacy and the craft and business of writing and publishing books.

The second day will be similar to past year’s events with close to 100 Texas authors exhibiting, selling and autographing their books while talking to attendees, according to an event news release.

In breakout sessions guests will be able to learn more about certain authors, agents, publishers and literacy projects.

Bruce Foster, designer of almost 40 pop-up books, is scheduled to attend the book fest as well.

The first day will cost $40 and attendees should pre-register to get a free lunch. The second day will be free.

Now in its seventh year, this is the first time the book fest will offer seminars. Seminar attendees will have the opportunity to earn continuing education credits.

At the event, the winning title of the East Texas Book Award contest, which the Tyler Morning Telegraph sponsored, will debut.

The Smith County Area Libraries Together (SALT) and the Tyler Area Partners for Literacy (TAP) are partnering to put on the event.

Dr. Dee Brock, a retired PBS vice president of education, and Dr. Kouider Mokhtari, Anderson-Vukelja-Wright Endowed Professor of Literacy Education at The University of Texas at Tyler, are event co-chairs.

The deadline for submitting author applications is May 15. The Book Fest committee will send acceptance notifications in June. Email etxbookfest@yahoo.com with questions or visit http://etxbookfest.org for more information.
