BULLARD —The 16th-ranked Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies got back into action after a week of rain and weather delays, sweeping a conference doubleheader over Northeast Texas Community College on Wednesday afternoon at Schwab Field.
Chapel Hill grad Halie Vance was not happy enough with a four-hitter in the circle in the opener so the sophomore threw a two-hitter in a complete seven-inning finale.
The Apaches took Game 1 playing small ball as Marina Duran laid down two sacrifice bunts to sett up the eventual game-winning run and some insurance as catcher Amber Landry scored all three runs in the 3-1 TJC win.
In Game 2, Vance threw a complete game two-hitter and four TJC doubles out of eight hits played into the 6-1 final.
“We have got a deep pitching staff and we are going to need everyone of them this weekend (back-to-back doubleheaders),” TJC coach Nicole Dickson said about Vance throwing two games. “And Halie had not thrown in a while and we needed to get her in game shape, so she was going to go as long as we needed her and she did a great job in both games.
“At the plate we try to score every inning and we are looking to hit the ball at every at-bat and we have got to keep attacking the ball with some big games coming up this weekend.”
The Apaches will be in action with another home game on Saturday, entertaining Kilgore College in a conference twin bill beginning at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the Apaches will trek to Paris to play the Lady Dragons in a make-up game beginning at 1 p.m.
