Lufkin, Lindale top 16-5A golf

FRANKSTON — Led by Marco Maldonado’s 66, the Lufkin Panthers took the first-round lead on Monday in the District 16-5A Golf Tournament at Pine Dunes Resort & Golf Club.
In the girls tournament, Whitehouse, paced by Bailey West, Kyndall and Allyson Carter, captured the first-round lead with a 382. Lindale is second at 430. Lindale’s Kennedy Wheeler fired an 84 to hold down first in the medalist race.
The Panthers carded a 293, while Lindale is second at 307.
Cameron Brown of Jacksonville and Garrett White of Lindale are tied for second with 71s.
The second round is scheduled for Eagle’s Bluff Country Club in Bullard on Wednesday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
