Despite early start, Apaches win opener

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Up next for the Apaches is No. 1 seed Connors State of Warner, Oklahoma. Gametime is 2 p.m.

All five starters for the Cowboys (31-1) average in double figures, led by 6-4 sophomore guard Ronnie Boyce of Oklahoma City (18.5 ppg) and 6-3 sophomore guard Corbie Ervin of Oklahoma City (15.7 ppg, 8.4 assists). Other starters are 6-7 sophomore forward Phabian Glasco of Tulsa, Oklahoma (12.8 ppg, 10.5 rebounds), 6-9 freshman forward Arlando Cook of St. Louis and 6-3 freshman guard Devin Simms of St. Louis.


The top reserve is 6-0 freshman guard Damari Edwards of Tulsa (9.5 ppg).

Ervin’s 8.4 assists ranks fourth in the NJCAA.

The Cowboys have won 29 straight. Their only loss was 84-83 to Arkansas Baptist College on Nov. 5 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

ABC is the only common opponent between the two schools. TJC defeated Arkansas Baptist 81-70 on Nov. 13 in the Kilgore Classic.

The Apaches’ Dale Jones (17.3), Dominique Shaw (14.4) and Faith Pope (12.5) average in double figures.

The winner of the TJC-Connors State game will play in the quarterfinals at noon on Thursday. The opponent will be either No. 8 South Plains (Texas) (26-6) or No. 9 Vincennes (Indiana) (33-1), who play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
