Roller derby season in East Texas has officially kicked off, with a double-header to open the season held Saturday at Skateland , USA in Jacksonville.

Skateland was packed with cheering fans armed with homemade signs – coming from throughout East Texas, some from as far as Conroe, to support their favorite team.

The premise of the game is relatively simple. There are two teams that take the track, each trying to prevent the other’s “Jammer” from passing them. The Jammer starts off behind the pack as they attempt to position themselves and form a wall in front of her.

According to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rules, “Points are earned when the Jammer passes each opposing skater, including those who have been knocked to the floor, are out of play or are considered to be in the box.”

Jamie Kingsley, no. 999 for the East Texas Bombers, alternated as a Jammer while her two young children screamed and held up a sign every time she passed. On top of being a mom and derby girl, Ms. Kingsley also is a fitness instructor and full-time student.

Ms. Kinglsey’s team, The East Texas Bombers, strive to empower young girls in their community through confidence building, community and sportsmanship. The team recently ‘adopted’ Bergfeld Park.
