(KYTX) — Cole Middleton was in Austin Tuesday to testify in favor of a bill that will require law enforcement officers to go through special training in dealing with non-aggressive animals. Middleton says, passing this bill can help save our pets.

“If it takes Candy to get this done, well then Candy’s death is certainly not in vain, hopefully she saved countless other lives of companions.”

The Canine Encounter bill, also known as “Candy’s Law” went before The committee on Homeland Security & Public Safety this morning. Middleton lost his dog Candy last year from a Rains County Deputy who shot the animal in the back of the head after responding to a burglary. Middleton believes the “Justice for Candy” movement is making a difference.

“It shows that our efforts are paying off and we’re not the only ones who fought in the fight, it shows the effort that many more victims that this same tragedy has happened to are paying off.”

Middleton has faith that this bill will pass.

“This law, it’s a good thing it’s common sense and I think the law makers realized that everyone we spoke to agrees that this makes sense and it does so we’re real hopeful.”
