RICHARDSON — UT Tyler was hoping for its second straight Sweet 16 berth, but rival UT Dallas edged the Patriots, 67-65, in an NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament second round game on Sunday at the UTD Recreational Center.

Senior Brittany King finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Comets (26-4) were able to hold off the Patriots in the final seconds.

Trailing by a game-high nine points (54-45) with 8:42 left, the Patriots (27-3) mounted a furious comeback as King tied the score 63-63 with just 46 seconds remaining. She scored on an assist from Teylor Seals.

Amber Brown gave the Comets the lead again, converting a layup for a 65-63 advantage with 33 seconds remaining.

With 15 seconds remaining, King was called for a charge, giving the ball to the Comets. Brown made 1 of 2 free throws after being fouled with 13 seconds showing. The free throw gave UTD a 66-63 advantage.

King scored on a layup with 4 seconds showing as the Patriots were within 66-65. UTD’s Madi Hess made a free throw with 2 seconds remaining and the Patriots could not get a good shot.

The Comets advance to the third round and will play No. 3-ranked George Fox University (29-0) of Newberg, Oregon, on Friday in a third-round game on the campus of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Game time has yet to be determined.

Madison Wilson added 13 points for the Patriots and nine rebounds, while Michelle Obach had 10 points and six assists. King had four blocks and Seals added five assists.

Iemah Wallace-Perry led the Comets with 22 points, while Brown added 20 points and 12 rebounds.

The 27 wins on the year ties a program-record for victories in-a-season for the Patriots, while King finishes her career as the leading rebounder in program history.
