Chili cookoff set for this weekend

The 34th Ever Rose City Chili Cookoff will be held this weekend behind Gander Mountain.

This event benefits The Spirit of St. Louis Therapeutic Riding Center for special needs teens and adults to interact with specially trained horses.


There will be competitions in the following categories:

Beans (any kind of beans, the only rule is that whatever kind of bean it is, they must look, smell and taste like that bean) entry fee is $10 and turn-in time is 12 noon.

Junior Chili, for ages 7 to 17, must have adult supervision and follow CASI chili cooking rules, entry fee is $10, turn-in time is at 1:00 PM We will be glad to pair these Juniors with a seasoned CASI cook for mentoring purposes if desired.

CASI chili, which is judged on Aroma, Red Color, Consistency, Taste and Aftertaste, entry fee is $20, turn-in time for judging is 2:00 PM.

Showmanship, which is judged on Theme, Costume, Booth Decoration, Action and Audience Appeal, must be entered in the CASI chili and this runs from 12 noon till 1:00.

People’s Choice is for local bragging rights, the public votes on this and there are no rules for this chili. A $3 donation will get you a tasting cup, spoon and voting ballot. This will start approx. 11:30 and run until all chili is gone. Must keep your cup and spoon for all tasting, replacements will be another $3 donation.

Registration will begin at 8:30 Saturday morning.
