Apache Ladies aim for win today in Region XIV opener vs. Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE — It’s ladies day at the Region XIV Basketball Tournament today.

The women of Region XIV make their debut for March Madness as four quarterfinal games are set for Jacksonville ISD Gymnasium.


On the schedule today is No. 11 nationally ranked Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies, who are the No. 2 seeds. TJC (26-3) will meet host and No. 7 seed Jacksonville College (16-13) at 6 p.m.

Other games today include:

No. 1 Trinity Valley (26-3) vs. No. 8 Panola (14-14), 1 p.m.;

No. 4 San Jacinto (22-8) vs. No. 5 Angelina (20-10), 3 p.m.;

No. 3 Blinn (19-10) vs. No. 6 Bossier Parish (17-12), 8 p.m.

The winner of the TJC vs. Jacksonville game advances to the semifinals on Friday to meet the winner of the Blinn-Bossier Parish contest. The game is set for 3 p.m.

The Apache Ladies finished second in the league to No. 4-ranked Trinity Valley. TJC was 17-3, while TVCC was 18-2. Jacksonville had a record of 9-11.

TJC won both contests with the Lady Jaguars, but both were in 2014. The Apache Ladies won 79-69 at Curtis Carroll Field House in Jacksonville on Nov. 22 and 69-50 a little over two weeks later at Wagstaff Gymnasium in Tyler on Dec. 10.

The Apache Ladies, coached by Trenia Tillis-Jones, are averaging 81.6 points per game and are led by three players in double figure scoring — forward Brittny Norris (16.8 ppg), guard Victoria Kemokai (16.3) and Jasmine Prophet (13.0).

Prophet is also tops in rebounding at 8.8, followed by Norris at 6.0. Kemokai averages 4.1 assists per game.

The Lady Jags, coached by Leasa Ailshie, have a balanced scoring attack. No player is averaging in double figures, but six are close. Christian Robinson leads at 9.4 points, followed by Jamie Lamb (8.9), Kristina Smith (8.4) and Brianna Wise (8.3).

Robinson also leads at 6.3 rebounds per game.

Both clubs enter the contest having won three straight games.

SMOKE SIGNALS: Tournament passes are $25. Daily passes are $6 for adults and $3 for students with IDs and children under 18. … The winner of the women’s tournament receives an automatic bid to the NJCAA National Tournament March 16-21 in Salina, Kansas. This is the final year of the tourney in Salina before it moves to Lubbock for the next three years beginning in 2016.
