Jacksonville athletic director and head football coach Chris Taber announced his resignation on Tuesday morning, the Jacksonville Daily Progress reported.

Taber will return to Chapel Hill to serve as offensive coordinator, a job he left three years ago to lead the Indians. With the Bulldogs, Taber helped the school win a state championship.

“This opportunity came along and I felt it was right for my career and the right thing to do for my family now,” Taber told the Daily Progress. “I love Jacksonville and the people here and I have enjoyed working here for the past three years.

“I have a lot of respect for (Chapel Hill head football coach) Thomas Sitton and for the program he runs at Chapel Hill and I believe this was an opportunity that I just could not pass up.”

In three years with the Indians, Taber’s head coaching record was 8-23.

With Jacksonville ISD superintendent Dr. Joseph Wardell retiring at the end of the month, the Daily Progress said Wardell and Dr. Chad Kelly, who is scheduled to be formally approved as Wardell’s replacement, will work together on finding a replacement for Taber.
