Esperanza Zavaleta converted a penalty kick with 10 minutes left to send John Tyler to a 1-0 victory over Corsicana in a District 16-5A girls soccer match on Monday at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

In a make-up after icy weather postponed the game originally scheduled for Friday, the Lady Lions (7-7-2, 4-3-1) maintained their grasp on third place with the narrow win.

The penalty kick was awarded late in the game when a shot from midfielder Jolenne Calleja was handled in the box.

“My defense did a great job,” said Lady Lions coach Pakaal Mendoza, commending the efforts of defenders Azucena Trujillo and Mary Cornelio as well as Calleja and forward Kyra Viramontes.

John Tyler will play Lindale today at Eagle Stadium at 7 p.m.
