The No. 2-ranked Dallas South Oak Cliff Golden Bears outscored Lufkin by 18 points in the first quarter and then cruised to a 95-78 win on Saturday in a Class 5A area playoff game at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium.
SOC (32-5) advances to the regional quarterfinals next week against No. 1 Lancaster.
The Panthers end their season at 20-15.
After Worth Gabriel was 1-for-2 at the foul line, Lufkin pulled within 18-12 of the Golden Bears. SOC then went on a 14-2 run for a 32-14 first-quarter advantage.
The more aggressive Golden Bears received a basket from Prentice McKinney and four straight 3-pointers two by C.J. Massinburg and one each from Kedrian Johnson and Prentice McKinney to fuel the run.
The Panthers’ Ja’Darrien Bennett nailed a trey to cut the deficit to nine points, 62-53, at the 3:26 mark of third quarter but that was as close as Lufkin would come.
Massinburg scored a game high 37 points by hitting 18-of-19 free throw attempts and McKinney added 12 points and 11 rebounds for SOC.
Lufkin was led in scoring by Bennett’s 20 points and KeKe Coutee’s 18.
Junior Cameron Hart finished with nine rebounds before fouling out for the Panthers.
