GARLAND — Robert E. Lee scored two more goals and only a last-minute tally denied the Red Raiders another shutout.
Lee will have to settle for a 2-1 win Thursday over Rowlett. The victory kept the Red Raiders (8-1, 22 points) within two points of first-place North Garland, which also won Thursday.
REL did all of its damage in the first half, with Eric Munoz scoring on a penalty kick after Rowlett handled the ball in the box. Lee doubled its advantage on a goal from Luis Carrillo off a pass from Alex Ruben.
With one minute remaining, Rowlett got on the board, but that was all Lee keeper Daniel Abarca allowed. It snapped a three-game shutout streak.
“We played a little better possession, but we still need to improve on that,” Lee coach Marty Germany said. “We kind of controlled things in the second half and they scored a scrappy goal late because we failed to clear out of our box.”
The Red Raiders will be back on the pitch Saturday afternoon against Lakeview Centennial. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
