Candidates file for Tyler ISD positions

Only one candidate had filed for each of two seats on the Tyler ISD board of trustees up for election May 9, when the deadline passed Friday for candidates to file for election.

Seats on the seven-member board up for grabs are the District 5 position representing central east Tyler and the District 7 position representing the middle of town and west and south areas along U.S. Highway 69.

The incumbents were the only candidates who filed. Trustee Andy Bergfeld filed for re-election to the District 7 seat, and Trustee Barbara Smith filed for re-election to the District 5 seat.

Bergfeld, 44, is a real estate owner/broker whose three children attend Tyler ISD schools. He is finishing a second consecutive term on the board but previously served seven years as a District 1 trustee. He left the board in 2007, when he moved out of District 1 and now resides in District 7.

Ms. Smith, 66, is a former educator and mother of seven children, six of whom attended Tyler ISD schools. She is seeking her first full term on the board. She won election last May to serve out the term of Brad Spradlin, who resigned.
