Rose City Classic begins Thursday

The 24th Annual Rose City Classic begins Thursday at UT Tyler’s Irwin Field and at Mike Carter Field.
Hosted by Robert E. Lee, the event features 16 baseball games in three days showcasing the talents from area schools Lufkin, Sulphur Springs, Hallsville, Nacogdoches, Atlanta, Carthage and Forney.
The first two games of the Classic will begin simultaneously with Lufkin vs. Sulphur Springs at UT Tyler and Hallsville vs. Nacogdoches at Mike Carter.First pitch, weather permitting, is at 10 a.m.
Only the Sulphur Springs-Lufkin game of the RCC will be held at Irwin Field. The remaining 15 games are all at Mike Carter.
Lee will open its season at 7 p.m. today against Atlanta at Mike Carter Field. The Red Raiders are slated to face Sulphur Springs and Nacogdoches on Friday and Forney on Saturday.
Hallsville reached the Class 5A state semifinals last season.
Other returning playoff teams involved this week include host Lee (5A bi-district), Carthage (3A regional quarterfinals) and Nacogdoches (4A bi-district).
