It was a perfect “Senior Day” for both UT Tyler basketball teams on Saturday.

The two Patriot squads captured wins over American Southwest Conference opponent Louisiana College at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriot women topped off an incredible regular season with a 100-73 win over the Lady Wildcats.

Then the Patriot men, who have had a tough year, scored a 77-76 victory over the Wildcats when senior Chris Rios drained a 3-pointer with 7.2 seconds remaining, spoiling LC’s chance at the ASC regular season title.

The UT Tyler women, ranked No. 10 in the land and No. 1 in the South region, had already clinched the ASC regular season championship and with it the right to host the ASC Tournament for the second straight year. The winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Patriots (24-1, 19-1 ASC) have won 19 straight games and will be the No. 1 seed in the ASC postseason tourney which is scheduled for Feb. 26-28 at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots will take on No. 8 seed Ozarks at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. UT Tyler is 2-0 against the Eagles, winning 96-59 in Tyler and 88-62 in Clarksville, Arkansas.

The Patriot men conclude their season with a 4-21 overall record and 3-17 in league play.

Women

It was a special day for four UT Tyler seniors who played their last regular season game on their home court — post Brittany King (Mesquite, Cisco College), guard Teylor Seals (Houston, Blinn College), Jasmin Baskin (Copperas Cove, Cisco College) and Ashleigh Dykes (Milano, Iowa Lakes Community College).

The foursome was honored between games.

Six Patriots scored in double figures, led by seniors Dykes (18) and Seals (17). King had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Makenzi May tied with Dykes for the team-high of 18 points, while D’Onna Matthews added 16 points and Tyler native Michelle Obach had 11.

Danisha Allison paced the Lady Wildcats with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Louisiana College is 16-7 overall and 13-7 in league. The Lady Wildcats host Rust College on Monday before meeting Mary Hardin-Baylor in the ASC Tournament in Tyler on Thursday.

Men

Before the game, five UT Tyler seniors were honored — forward Chris Rios (Houston, San Jacinto College), forward Caleb Summerville (Cayuga), Josiah Summerville (Cayuga), guard Stephon Hall (Dallas, Eastfield College), and guard Nick Ross (Carrollton, Texas A&M-Commerce).

Rios went out with a bang, nailing the game-winning 3-pointer and leading the Patriots with 25 points.

Louisiana College (14-9, 14-6) seemed to be in control in the second half, leading by as many as 11 points in the second half, but the Patriots would not quit.

With 43 seconds remaining, LC’s Kevin Lewis hit the Wildcats’ last bucket of the night, giving the visitorsa 76-74 lead.

After a Louisiana College missed free throw, Rios hit the game-winner at the top of the key in front of two Wildcat defenders.

LC’s Anthony Gaines Jr., who finished the night with 25 points, missed a layup at the buzzer, securing the win for the Patriots.

Junior Anthony Gonzales Jr. had 20 points for UT Tyler. Tyler Jacobs had 15 points and five rebounds for the Orange and Blue, while Dadrian Taylor added 10 crucial points off the bench.

Louisiana College will play Concordia-Texas in the ASC tourney at noon Thursday. East Texas Baptist in Marshall will host the men’s event.
