Apaches take two from Vernon

Jonathan Groff pitched six innings of one-hit ball as the No. 1-ranked Tyler Junior College Apaches defeated Vernon College 8-0 to sweep a baseball doubleheader on Friday at Mike Carter Field.
In the first game, Jace Vines pitched five innings, allowing four hits while striking out three, in the Apaches’ 12-2 five-inning victory.
Zane Otten led the TJC attack in the first game, going 3 for 4 with four RBIs. He had two doubles.
The Apaches banged out nine hits with Derek Clemons going 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. Jacob Hickman added a double and two RBIs.
Others with singles were Tim Hunter, Zane Ancell and Gunnar Quick. Reid Russell had an RBI.
Luis Rivas paced the Chaparrals with two hits.
In the second game, Groff kept the Chaps under control. He had six strikeouts. Jimmy Johnson pitched the final inning and also had a strikeout.
Hunter led the Apaches with a 3 for 4 day and two RBIs. Clemons had two hits and two RBIs. Hickman had a double.
Otten and Manny Galvan had one hit and one RBI apiece. Brandon Webb, Quick and Cam Reeves each had hits. Alex Masotto added an RBI.
The Apaches (11-1) return to play on Monday playing the UT Tyler JV at Irwin Field. The game has a 6 p.m. start.
Vernon (4-6) plays host to Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa on Monday in doubleheader.
