SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A 19-year-old man has been accused of drowning his pregnant girlfriend and trying to burn her body in a field near San Antonio.

Courtney Hyriease Velasques was arrested Friday in San Antonio. The Bexar (bayr) County sheriff’s office says Velasques was being held on a charge of capital murder of multiple persons.

Investigators say 18-year-old Dawanna Thomas was nearly five months pregnant when her body was discovered last Saturday by firefighters. Emergency personnel were responding to reports of a grass fire when they came upon the victim.

Authorities say Velasques allegedly drowned Thomas in Salado (suh-LAY’-doh) Creek, then attempted to burn her body.

Details weren’t immediately available on bond or an attorney for Velasques.
