Everyone’s favorite talking dog is coming to Tyler. Theatre TJC debuts its rendition of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” on Wednesday.

Based on Charles M. Schulz’s beloved “Peanuts” comic strip, the musical comes complete with barnstorming Snoopy.

“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” runs 7:30 nightly Wednesday through Feb. 28 at Tyler Junior College’s Wise Auditorium. For reservations or information, call the box office at 903-510-2212. Tickets are on sale now, and are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and are free for TJC students with an I.D. at the door.

Theater professor David Crawford is the stage director and Andrea Trent, a professor of music, is in charge of the music and directs the orchestra. The TJC dance department is contributing to the production with Carolyn Hannah, a professor of dance, overseeing choreography.

“Charlie Brown” sees the titular character struggling to overcome his anxiety in order to talk to the Little Red-Haired Girl and is failing miserably. Each character is giving time in the spotlight.

“We normally would take our actors and analyze our characters and go into the psychology and the physical, but here the work is already done,” Crawford said. “I sent them all home with the comic strips and said, this is who you are. The audience is coming out, expecting to see “Peanuts’ characters.”

The play will be familiar to anyone who grew up reading “Peanuts,” which is pretty much all of us, and will serve as a wonderful introduction for children who are not familiar with the characters.

Ryan Ordmandy plays Charlie Brown with the lovable awkwardness. Ordmandy nails Charlie’s body language. Snoopy, as played by Tyler Larson, is manic and excitable, everything you’d expect from an anthropomorphic dog.

“It helps that it’s a cartoon character already, because I don’t have to go up against, like, Hugh Jackman playing Charlie Brown.” Ordmandy said. “It’s a lot of work, but the fun of it all makes it worth it.”

Kelsey Kilgore plays Lucy and makes her likable, even as she dispenses obnoxious advice and plays mean tricks on her friends.

“It’s fun to just release my inner kid once again,” Kilgore said. “I didn’t really think Lucy was in my personality … and now I can’t see it any other way.”

The excitement and enthusiasm of the cast allows for a fun time. Kids especially will get a kick out of Snoopy’s antics.

“Charlie Brown” also stars Leslee Marler as Sally, Cameron Davis as Linus and Cody Wagner as Schroeder.
