Chili Bowl and Auction tonight

Put on your western wear and get ready for some spice because The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary will have its 12th Chili Bowl and Auction tonight.

The event is scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Harvey Hall Convention Center, 2000 W. Front St., in Tyler. 


Wrapped in their traditional blue aprons, auxiliary members will be there to welcome eager chili lovers and auction goers, according to an organization news release.

The western-themed event will feature music by Terry Davis’ band “Old Guys Rule” along with performances from special guests Lizzie Davis and the famous Kay Steppers, the latter of which will line dance to popular country western tunes. 

Simmering chili will be served with all the fixings including beans, cheese, onions, cornbread and Fritos, according to the news release. 

For attendees who prefer a less spicy meal, Chick-fil-A’s chicken noodle soup will be available.

Dakotas Steak House will provide assorted desserts and Blue Bell ice cream bars, specialty coffee and teas also will be available.

“What a great opportunity for people to come out and enjoy the best chili around,” auxiliary spokeswoman Virginia M. Barron said.

Former Smith County Sheriff J. B. Smith will serve as auctioneer for the night.

Auction items include a three-ton Trane air conditioner unit, 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, mink stole and jacket, lamb coat with sable collar,Collins ladies purse, Jackie Kennedy pearl necklace and bracelet, ladies luncheon for 10, Cricket mini golf cart, Senate chair from the Capitol in Austin and a sterling silver bracelet. 

The silent auction opens at 5:30 p.m. and will include a football autographed by Heisman Trophy Winner Johnny Manziel, paintings, men’s western boots, golf packages, auto service packages,jewelry and Sports Nations signed sports memorabilia.

The event also will feature two competitions, one for tabletop decorating and the other for best-dressed cowgirl and cowboy. A western-themed photo booth will be open for pictures.
