Minter, Moss, Gideon lead Aggies past HC, 19-2

COLLEGE STATION — Whitehouse native and Bullard Brook Hill graduate A.J. Minter struck out seven without allowing an earned run in five innings of work to help Texas A&M to a 19-2 victory over Holy Cross in both teams’ season openers on Friday at Blue Bell Park.
Minter was making his Friday night starting debut for the Aggies (1-0) after going 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA last year, mostly as a reliever. The left-handed junior allowed five hits and two unearned runs.
JB Moss, Minter’s former teammate at Brook Hill, started in the leadoff spot for Texas A&M. Moss didn’t record a hit but scored two runs to spark the Aggies.
Another East Texan, Hallsville native Ronnie Gideon, was the primary source of RBIs for Texas A&M, going 4 for 6 with eight RBIs. He had a two-run double and three-run homer in his first two at bats.
TJC softball sweeps two
WEATHERFORD — The Tyler Junior College softball team improved to 11-3 on the season by sweeping two games on Friday in the Coyote Chillout Softball Tournament.
The Apache Ladies defeated host Weatherford 3-2 and Cisco 4-3 in nine innings.
In the first game against the Coyotes, Lacie Stevens had two hits and an RBI, while Brittani Whitten had two RBIs. Halie Vance struck out eight.
Against Cisco, Halle Sabo had two hits and two RBIs.
TJC is scheduled to play Hill College and Hillsborough College of Florida today.
