ROCKWALL — Robert E. Lee’s hot streak continued Friday as the Red Raiders secured their fifth district win a row by blanking Rockwall 2-0 at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.

Lee (5-1, 2-0, 13 points) remains in second place in 11-6A with the win while Rockwall (2-4, 0-0, 6 pts) remains near the bottom of the league standings.

The Red Raiders went ahead in the 28th minute thanks to a ball played into the box by Will Arnold that caused a mid-air collision between Lee’s Alex Ruben and Rockwall’s keeper. The ball deflected off the keeper and went straight to Luis Carrillo, who scored.

REL doubled its lead just before halftime and again Ruben and Rockwall’s keeper were involved. Geroham Gonzalez played a pass through the defense to Ruben. The Yellowjackets keeper decided to come off his line and try and get to the ball before Ruben. His sliding attempt missed Ruben and the ball, enabling the Red Raiders player to take it the rest of the way into the open net.

Lee keeper Daniel Abarca got the clean sheet for the Red Raiders, which faces Naaman Forest on Tuesday with kickoff slated for 7:15 p.m. at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

“We won, but we played poorly,” Lee coach Marty Germany said. “Our possession game was off and we missed too many tackles. We did what we needed to do to get the win and I am happy we kept a clean sheet, but we have to play cleaner to be successful in the long run.”

Lee girls win on PKs

ROCKWALL — Robert E. Lee goalkeeper Lauren Nichols produced a third-straight clean sheet and the Lady Raiders topped Rockwall in penalty kicks for their third-straight win Friday.

This was Lee’s second penalty-kick situation. REL lost its first opportunity at PKs, but this time Yelsi Rosales, Adrianna Perez, Jazmine Navarro, Hailey Hurst made their attempts as the teams were tied after five shooters. Than Adai Urieta scored and Rockwall failed to match to give Lee a 5-4 shootout win.

“We outplayed them in the first half and looked like we had one go in on a long shot by Yelsi,” Lee coach Chris Woodard said. “It hit the underside of the bar and the dual ref system wasn’t in position to see it. But Lauren made some key 1 vs. 1 saves and I am proud of the girls and how they battled against one of our district’s top teams.”

The Lady Raiders (2-2, 1-1, 9 pts) next face Naaman Forest at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Lee High School’s Red Raider Field.

John Tyler girls blank Nacogdoches, 3-0

NACOGDOCHES — John Tyler freshman Kyla Viramontes had a goal and an assist to help the Lady Lions score a 3-0 victory over Nacogdoches on Friday in District 16-5A action.

Viramontes set up Jaqueline Ibarra for the first goal before connecting on a pass from Esperanza Zavaleta.

Diana Perez put the game away for JT (5-5-2, 2-1-1 District 16-5A0 off an assist from Katya Delgado.

“We’re playing well,” Lady Lions coach Pakaal Mendoza said.

Mendoza commended the play of Mary Cornelio and Jolenne Calleja in defense, Zavaleta controlling the midfield and Viramontes scoring and setting up goals up front.

The Lady Lions, who moved up to third place in 16-5A, are back in action against Jacksonville on Tuesday at John Tyler High School Field at 7 p.m. They finish up the first half of district play the following Friday at Lufkin at 6 p.m.

Lions stopped by Dragons, 2-1

John Tyler scored early but couldn’t hold on as Nacogdoches beat the Lions 2-1 on Friday at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Staidum in District 16-5A action.

It was the second league loss for JT (7-3-4, 2-1-1 16-5A) in 14 games dating back to last season.

“It was a bad night to have an off night,” Lions coach Howard Story said.

John Tyler senior Aron Alonso put his team in front 10 minutes into the game when the Dragons failed to clear a ball sent into the box.

However Nacogdoches equalized five minutes later on a well-struck free kick. With five minutes before halftime, the Dragons struck again to go into the break up 2-1.

Though the Lions held a 19-10 advantage in shots and took 20 free kicks, they couldn’t find an equalizer.

“I am encouraged by the fact that we are creating opportunities; I’m discouraged by the fact that we’re not completing those opportunities,” Story said.

The Lions return to action on the road against Jacksonville on Tuesday before finishing up the first half of 16-5A play with a home game against Lufkin at John Tyler High School Field.
