Grant Hanks showed what he could do when a defense doesn’t focus on him.

Unfortunately for Bullard Brook Hill, it came too late.

All Saints started strong and built a 26-point lead before Hanks scored the final 12 points of the game as the Trojans scored a 60-46 victory in the TAPPS 2-4A tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon at Brookshire Gym.

All Saints (32-2) will play Dallas Christian for the district title at 5:30 p.m. today while the Guard battle Bishop Gorman for third place at 2:30 p.m., both back at All Saints’ gym.

Trojans seniors Jaired Maddox scored 18 and Aston Francis added 13. But for All Saints coach Eddie Francis, the defense was the key, particularly Spencer Ball, Sean Phillips and Clayton Smith, the latter of whom had a game-high five steals.

“Spencer Ball’s defense on Hanks is crazy,” coach Francis said. “I thought these kids really got after it. I thought they did a good job of stopping their best two players and giving us a chance to win.”

Hanks finished with 21 points, 19 coming in the fourth quarter and most after Ball and the rest of the Trojans starters had gone to the bench.

The Guard senior connected on 7 of 9 shots in the frame, making up for missing much of the first half with foul trouble. Hanks’ efforts cut a 60-34 lead to 60-46 with 12 points and three steals in the final 2:20.

Prior to Hanks’ outburst, the Trojans controlled the tempo for most of the game. All Saints jumped out to an 8-0 lead and then used a 6-1 burst to make it 14-3, both runs prompting timeouts from Brook Hill coach Jacob Agnew, who used four timeouts in the first half to try to stem the Trojans tide.

All Saints went scoreless from the 1:30 mark in the first until midway through the second quarter but maintained its lead, stretching it to 29-12 in the final minute of the half.

“Our defense kept us in the game and kept us with a decent lead,” coach Francis said.

After going 0 for 12 from long range in the first half, the Guard finally started hitting in the third, draining a trio of treys in the opening 2:30 to pull within 32-23. However, All Saints finished the quarter on a 13-3 run to rebuild a 19-point lead heading into the final frame.

In the previous meeting between the two, All Saints won 70-63. Brook Hill made eight 3-pointers that day but shot 5 for 23 on Friday.

Francis, who scored 28 in that game, came off the bench and made an impact despite playing through a stress fracture that forced him to miss the last two weeks.

As in that prior game, Maddox stole the show offensively, following up a 29-point performance with his 18, including a behind-the-back move to the basket in the third quarter.

DALLAS CHRISTIAN 54, BISHOP GORMAN 43

After knocking off Grace Community in the first round, Bishop Gorman couldn’t get anything going on Friday night in the other boys semifinal, falling 54-43 to Dallas Christian.

Sophomore Marlon Brown scored 11 of his 17 points in the opening half while teammate Zacchaeus Carter added 10 as the Chargers ran out to a 30-15 halftime lead.

Judah Bell led the Crusaders with 23 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

Gorman had only three field goals in the first half while shooting 6 of 18 from the free throw line.

Crusader Payton Fanning knocked down two treys, and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Nic Vandiver for Gorman cut into the lead at 42-28 after three periods.

GIRLS

CARROLLTON PRINCE OF PEACE 43, GRACE COMMUNITY 39

Cori Schnell didn’t have all of her supporting cast with her on Friday, so when called upon, she took the game over herself.

Schnell scored 14 of her 31 points in the fourth quarter to help shorthanded Carrollton Prince of Peace hold off Grace Community 43-39 in a TAPPS 2-4A girls tournament semifinal.

The second-seeded Lady Eagles, who played with seven players on the roster, will play No. 1 Dallas Christian in the final today at 4 p.m. The Lady Cougars take on Frisco Legacy at 1 p.m. for third place.

Kylie Stinson paced Grace with 13 points and seven rebounds while Bethany Kimmey had nine points, eight boards and four steals.

The Lady Cougars led 28-27 heading into the fourth quarter before Schnell took over. She made 3 of 6 shots and 7 of 8 free throws in the period, scoring 14 of her team’s 16 points down the stretch.

Grace trailed by as much as five in the first half but stayed close with a large rebounding edge (25-11 through three quarters).

Consecutive buckets by Addie Daughtry capped a 6-0 run and put Grace up 28-24 with 2:00 left in the third, but shortly thereafter Daughtry and Kylie Stinson picked up their fourth fouls.

Behind Schnell, Prince of Peace rallied back, leading by as much as seven before Kimmey drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
