The TAPPS 2-4A district tournament begins in earnest Friday at All Saints’ Bruce G. Brookshire Family Student Athletic Center.
The girls and boys tournaments will decide who goes into the playoffs and with what seeds. The key battles will be for first place and the district title and fifth place, becoming the final team in and winning the only bid from the losers bracket.
After first-round games were held on Tuesday at the location of the higher seed, the semifinals and finals will be held Friday and Saturday.
All Saints is the top seed on the boys side and routed Dallas Shelton 98-17 on Tuesday. The Trojans (31-2) will take on Bullard Brook Hill (14-10) at 4:30 p.m. in the day’s marquee matchup.
The other boys semifinal pits Bishop Gorman, which knocked off rival Grace Community 52-50, against Dallas Christian at 7:30 p.m.
In the girls semifinals, top-seeded Dallas Christian takes on Frisco Legacy Christian at 3 p.m. followed by Carrollton Prince of Peace and Grace at 6 p.m. The Lady Cougars defeated All Saints 56-29 to reach the semifinals.
The top five teams at the end of the tournament make the playoffs in their respective seeds. The losers’ bracket will be just as heated as four boys and four girls teams vie for the final postseason berths.
The Gorman and Brook Hill girls will start the day with their match at 9 a.m. The winner of that will face either All Saints or Shelton (noon Friday) for the right to reach the playoffs. That fifth-place game will be 10 a.m. Saturday.
The boys games pit Shelton against Legacy (10 a.m.) and Grace against Prince of Peace (1:30 p.m.). The winners face off at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
As for the winners bracket, the Trojans are a favorite to claim the league title after reaching the state semifinals a year ago.
The All Saints boys’ only losses this year have come to Class 5A Frisco Wakeland and Class 6A Robert E. Lee, the latter a contentious affair in which the Red Raiders held the ball for most of the fourth quarter and two overtimes.
In the Trojans’ first meeting with the Guard, Jaired Maddox scored 29 and Aston Francis added 28 as All Saints won 70-63, outdueling Brook Hill guard Grant Hanks’ 17 points.
Francis, coach Eddie Francis’ son, leads All Saints in scoring with 22.8 per game, followed by Maddox (16.3) and four more players scoring between 6.8 and 9.3 points per game. As a team the Trojans score 79.8 per outing.
The third-place games will be held at 1 p.m. (girls) and 2:30 p.m. (boys) Saturday. The championship games are slated for 4 p.m. (girls) and 5:30 p.m. (boys).
