Tyler men fall short at Navarro

CORSICANA —After holding Navarro to 52 points in Tyler last month, Apaches coach Mike Marquis knew the Bulldogs would have their full arsenal in store when TJC visited Wednesday night.

Navarro was 9 of 16 from 3-point range as the Bulldogs avenged their loss to Tyler Junior College with a 97-86 win in a Region XIV basketball game at the Wolens Center.

Four Bulldogs (18-6, 10-4 Region XIV) scored in double figures with Arlington guard Chris Boleware leading the way with 19 points. He was followed by 6-7 post Wayne Martin of Brooklyn, New York, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

In Tyler’s 67-52 win in the Rose City, no Navarro player scored in double figures.

“They made some threes that we didn’t give them at our place,” said Marquis, whose club is 18-7 overall and 8-7 in league play. “Obviously we knew they would shoot better at home and they played with a lot of passion in front of a good crowd.

“We hung in there for a while, but we hurt our own momentum in the first half when things weren’t going our way. From about the 10-minute mark to the four-minute mark of the first half we really struggled.”

The Apaches fell behind by 11 at the half, 47-36. In the second half, Tyler was behind by 24 points, 64-40, before battling back. TJC was actually within seven with just under two minutes remaining when Dale Jones bombed back-to-back 3s and then the Apaches forced a turnover. However, that was as close as they would get.

Dominique Shaw, a sophomore guard from Lufkin, led Tyler with 21 points, while Jones, who was 4 of 7 from long distance, had 20 points. Tyler Miller contributed 21 points.

Jones led Tyler with seven rebounds.

Marquis said he was trying to “spread out the minutes with two tough games on the road at two tough places.” TJC plays at Trinity Valley Saturday. All the Apaches played with guards Jacob Socha, Jeremy Adams and Cohen Desouza getting playing time off the bench.

“Some guys that haven’t played much made some big plays,” Marquis said. “… Credit Navarro, they played well.”

Navarro coach Michael Landers was pleased with his team’s performance.

“I thought we played really well,” Landers said. “Last month in Tyler, defensively they gave us all kinds of problems. We couldn’t figure it out. Tonight out guys did a much better job of taking what was available. … In the first half we made a really big run because we were able to make some stops defensively.”

SMOKE SIGNALS: There was a number of Division I assistant coaches in the building including coaches from Texas Tech, Cal State-Bakersfield and Loyola-Marymount. … Former All-East Texas player Anthony Sanders from Athens scored seven points for the Bulldogs.
