Tyler city Council calls election

The Tyler City Council formally called its May election for three city council districts on Wednesday, but the election could be cancelled if no one else files.
With little more than two weeks left on the candidate filing time clock, only one person has filed for each of the three districts on May’s ballot.
City council members in odd districts are up for election in May. The mayor and council members in even districts have another year left in their two-year terms.
District 1, currently represented by Sam Mezayek, encompasses the western portion of south Tyler, mostly west of Broadway Avenue.
After three terms, or six years, Mezayak will rotate off the council and is not eligible for another term.
As of Wednesday, Linda Sellers, 70, is the only candidate to file for the open seat.
Mrs. Sellers has been in the insurance business since 1979 and is currently co-owner of Sellers-Patterson Insurance, which specializes in employee benefits.
District 3, currently represented by Ed Moore, covers the northwest, including N NW Loop 323, Van Highway and portions of Gentry Parkway.
Moore, a retired Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company employee, is the only person to file for the seat. If re-elected, the term would be the second for Moore.
District 5, currently represented by Mark Whatley, covers the east, including southeast Troup Highway and the western portions of Grande Boulevard.
Whatley, a commercial real estate broker, also filed for re-election for his seat. As of Wednesday, he was the only person to file in the district.
Candidates have until Feb. 27 to file for the three positions, with the uniform Election Day on May 9.
If no one files to run against the three candidates, the city will cancel the election.
