Robert E. Lee goalie Daniel Abarca saved two of the three penalties he faced to help the Red Raiders take down first-place North Garland 3-2 on penalty kicks on Tuesday at Red Raider Field.

The game was tied 2-2 before going to spot kicks, where Will Arnold, Sergio Saucedo, Christian Vasquez and Eric Munoz all converted. Geroham Gonzalez converted off a pass from Andres Ledesma to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead in the final minute of the first half.


After North Garland equalized 10 minutes into the second half, Joaquin Riveria scored on a spinning volley on a ball bouncing in the 18-yard box. However, North Garland again equalized with eight minutes left, sending the game to penalties.

 

Lady Raiders score 7 in rout over North Garland

Alex Bice tallied a hat trick as Robert E. Lee pounded North Garland 7-0 on Tuesday night at Rose Stadium. Priscilla Rincon scored two while Claire Carnes and Ashley Oldham also added goals for the Lady Raiders.

Hailey Hurst, Kourtney Hitchcock, Jazmine Navarro, Adrianna Perez, Kelli Kissinger and Carnes all tallied assists for REL. Lauren Nichols and Maya Thornton were in goal for the shutout.

 

Grace girls clinch first district championship

The Grace Community Lady Cougars clinched their first ever district title with a 7-0 victory over rival Bishop Gorman on Tuesday at Clyde-Perkins Stadium.

The Lady Lions (19-2-1) finished TAPPS D-II District 2 at 11-1 to win the title outright.

“It’s awesome,” Grace coach Mitch Smith said. “The girls were excited. It was also Senior Night, so to do it on Senior Night, it’s a great feeling. The girls have worked really hard to get this and so proud of them.”

Grace will have a bye in the playoffs before playing at home on Tuesday. The Lady Cougars will play either Bullard Brook Hill, which finished fourth in the district, or the third-place team out of TAPPS D-II District 3.

Scoring for Grace on Tuesday were Sophie Claire Rook (two), Lexye Price (two), Allie McCracken, Alex Schroeder and Sydney Molina. Adding assists were Brittani Smith (two), McCracken (two), Rook and Dianne Benner.

Lady Cougars Cheyenne Benner, Schroeder and Madison Newman were honored on Senior Night and coach Smith said he was grateful to have coached all three.

 

Grace Cougars too much for Gorman Crusaders, 6-0

The Grace Community Cougars soccer team concluded the regional season with a 6-0 win over Bishop Gorman in a TAPPS Division II District 2 match on Tuesday at Clyde-Perkins Stadium.

The Cougars advance to the playoffs and will play host to Flower Mound Coram Deo on Saturday at Clyde-Perkins Stadium.

Senior Kyle Eli used his head and feet to score two goals early to give GCS a 2-0 lead, while freshman Jacob Williams scored on a header from senior James Moore’s corner kick.

Senior Criss Barker capitalized on a penalty kick, followed by a Caleb Wheeler goal to take a 5-0 halftime lead. In the second half, Wheeler crossed the ball to senior Nathan Llave for his first careervarsity goal.

The shutout score was maintained by keepers Gerald Gray andParker Ary.
