BULLARD —The brand new Tyler Junior College softball team upped its season record to 9-3 with a doubleheader sweep of Hill College on Wednesday at Schwab Field.
Three Lacie Stevens doubles and three-hit pitching from Khandi Breaux sparked a 10-1 early end to Game 1.
Haley Mills led off Game 2 with a homerun and TJC never looked back in another shortened game, 10-0. The finale came on an inside-the-park home run from Madison Langston in the fifth. Junior college softball has an eight-run rule after five innings, accounting for the two five-inning games.
Ashlee Gibson threw a two-hit gem for the Apache Ladies.
“Khandi Breaux is coming off an injury and she threw a great game,” TJC coach Nicole Dickson said. “Ashlee (Gibson) is coming back from an injury too so it was huge for both Khandi and Ashlee to throw complete games and it’s so nice to have them back and for them to get some live action for us and they both did a great job of staying ahead of the hitters and letting the defense work.”
The Apache Ladies will play in the Weatherford Tournament this weekend, playing a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday. Hill College will also be a part of the tournament
In Game 1, Rebels leadoff hitter Zierra Gonzales lifted the first pitch over the left field fence for a quick 1-0 lead, but it didn’t last long. TJC responded with three runs in the first.
Mills finished the game 3 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored while Stevens tallied two runs and two RBIs with her trio of doubles.
Breaux struck out four and walked one to earn the win in the circle.
Like Gonzales in the Game 1, Mills started Game 2 with a first-pitch solo blast for the Apache Ladies.
Tyler scored six times in the fifth to end the game early, starting with Stevens’ fourth double of the day. Ashlin Roach belted a pinch-hit double and Madison Langston plated three with her home run to end it.
“We are just trying to have quality at-bats,” Dickson said. “We have a lot more power than we have speed so we are definitely gonna get up there and get some cuts. You’ve got three pitches to get us out hacking.”
The next TJC home game at Schwab Field will be Wednesday against Weatherford College in a doubleheader set to start at 1 p.m.
