ARLINGTON — John Tyler senior quarterback Geovari McCollister was named the Class 5A Built Ford Tough Texas High School Player of the Year on Saturday night.
McCollister was honored during a banquet at AT&T Stadium along with fellow East Texans McLane Carter of Gilmer and Kevin Johnson of Waskom, who earned the honors in Class 4A and Class 3A, respectively.
Player of the Year selections were made from 66 players who earned Player of the Week honors during the regular season — one each week from Class 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A and among private schools.
McCollister, a first-team All-East Texas selection and second-team TSWA all-state choice, completed 211 of 330 passes for 3,232 yards with 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He added 746 yards and 10 scores rushing.
The Lions signal caller guided JT to a 12-3 record and the Class 5A Division I state semifinals.
McCollister earned his Built Ford Tough Player of the Week award following JT’s 52-17 win over Whitehouse on Sept. 26, completing 14 of 20 passes for 295 yards and five touchdowns, adding 74 yards and a score on the ground.
Carter, a senior quarterback, led Gilmer to the Class 4A Division II state championship. He completed 220 of 297 passes for 3,969 yards, 47 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Johnson, a running back, likewise led Waskom to a Division II state title. He carried 134 times for 1,995 yards and 21 touchdowns, caught five passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns, returned three kickoffs for scores and racked up 167 tackles, three passes broken up, two forced fumbles and one defensive touchdown.
Other Player of the Year recipients were Kyler Murray of Allen in Class 6A, Hunter Lile of Booker in Class 2A and Rawleigh Williams III of Dallas Bishop Lynch for private schools.
Murray, who shared Player of the Year honors with DeSoto’s Desmon White a year ago, finished his high school career with a 42-0 record and three state titles at Allen. As a senior, he passed for 4,713 yards and rushed for 1,495 yards.
Lile passed for 3,676 yards and 39 touchdowns, rushed for 760 yards and 12 scores and had 118 tackles on defense. He now owns the state records for passing yards (14,408), passes attempted (1,677) and passes completed (1,047), and his 162 passing touchdowns ranks third all time in Texas.
Williams rushed for 2,814 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior for Bishop Lynch.
