College Baseball/Softball Rdp: Apaches sweep Frank Phillips

Tyler Junior College swept the Frank Phillips College in a doubleheader at Mike Carter Field on Saturday to continue their perfect start to the season.
The Apaches won 9-1 and 9-4 to move to 8-0 on the season. The Plainsmen fell to 0-3.
It was all TJC in Game 1, with the Apaches.
Manny Galvan got things started in the third when he scored on a Jacob Hickman single. Tim Hunter came home on a sacrifice fly to put TJC up 2-0.
Apaches starting pitcher Jace Vines allowed two hits and striking out eight in six innings to earn the win.
In Game 2, TJC pulled ahead early with one run in the first and three in the third to go up 4-0.
Frank Phillips chipped away in the fifth, plating two to trail 5-3. But TJC’s offense continued to dominate at the plate, with Reid Russell stepping in and hitting bomb beyond the center field wall in the home half of the fifth. Russell finished a triple shy of a cycle.
Jonathan Groff picked up the win, pitching five innings while allowing three runs, one earned run, four hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
Apache Ladies split in softball
EUNICE, La. — The Tyler Junior College softball squad split a pair of games Saturday.
In the first game, the Apache Ladies blanked Northwest Florida State Community College. In the second game, host LSU-Eunice defeated TJC 6-2.
Against NW Florida (2-7), Halie Vance tossed a six-hit shutout while striking out six.
Haley Mills led the offense with a 3-for-3 day at the plate with three RBIs. She had a single, double and a home run. Jaclyn Molenaar was 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Amber Landry was 2 for 4 with a homer and a two-bagger. Lacie Stevens had a single and an RBI, while Amber Pufal had two singles. Madison Langston added a hit while Brittani Whitten had an RBI.
In the second game, Raven Cole held the Apache Ladies to two hits while striking out nine as LSU-Eunice improved to 10-1. Kristi Springer pitched four innings for TJC, striking out two and walking six.
Halle Sabo had a double for TJC while Whitten blasted a home run.
The Apache Ladies (6-2) play both teams again today in Eunice. The first game against Northwest Florida is scheduled for noon, followed by the LSU-Eunice contest.
TJC will play on Wednesday at Bullard Brook Hill’s Schwab Field, hosting Hill College. The first game is slated to begin at noon.
Patriots baseball falls to 0-3
SEGUIN — Buddy McCoy drove in two runs, while Reid Coover delivered two hits, but the UT Tyler baseball team could not hold off Texas Lutheran, falling 8-6 on Saturday.
With the score tied 6-6 with two outs in the eighth, Tony Gennusa tripled in a run to give the Bulldogs (3-0) a 7-6 lead. A batter later, Zach Jacobs singled in Gennusa to give the home team a 8-6 lead.
UT Tyler had one last chance in the ninth, but couldn’t get a runner across.
Garrett Nelson finished off his strong weekend with a 2-for-5 game, including one RBI for UT Tyler, while Sam Lane, Daniel Stagg, Logan Tucker and Derick Smith finished with a hit apiece.
The Patriots (0-3) return home for their next four games, beginning with a rematch with TLU on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Tyler.
Patriots softball opens season Sunday
The No. 6-ranked UT Tyler softball team begins its season Sunday as the Patriots play host to Texas Lutheran at Suddenlink Field on the UT Tyler campus.
The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon.
The Patriots will open American Southwest Conference play on Friday as Sul Ross State visits UT Tyler. There is a doubleheader slated for Friday with games at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. A single game is scheduled for Saturday, beginning at noon.
