With both Mineola and Waskom earning state championship berths it was only natural several players from those squads earned honors on the 64th annual Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A all-state football team, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Also, Whitney quarterback Brett Gilchrist and Waskom linebacker Chan Amie were named Players of the Year. Gilchrist, a senior, threw for 4,364 yards and 46 touchdowns with only five interceptions. He added 733 yards rushing and six scores.

Amie, a junior, had 216 tackles, 36 of them for losses to lead Waskom to the Division II state title, a 41-22 win over Newton.

Cameron Yoe’s Rick Rhoades, who led his team to the state title win over Mineola in Class 3A Division I, was named Coach of the Year.

Several East Texans made the first team.

Leading the way on offense were Mineola junior tackle Austin Anderson, West Rusk junior guard Corey Brister and all-purpose Waskom senior June Bug Johnson.

Defensively, Mineola lineman Trevor Keener was voted first-team. He was joined by teammates Juan Vargas (senior linebacker) and Noah Sneed (sophomore defensive back).

Amie was a first-teamer at linebacker and was second-team kick returner.

Earning second-team honors from the area were Mineola sophomore running back Chantz Perkins, Waskom senior running back Kevin Johnson, Waskom senior fullback Dillon Benton and Malakoff senior tackle Jacob Busch.

Marcus Dowell, a senior running back from Malakoff, and A.J. Phillips, a junior wide receiver from Crockett, were voted to the third team offense.

Third-team defenders were Buffalo linebacker Dalton Thompson and White Oak defensive back Jake Pullen.
