Downtown fiber arts exhibit taking entries

Artists have until 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 to submit entries for Gallery Main Street’s “Exploding Boundaries” fiber arts exhibit.
The exhibit, which is produced by the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition in partnership with the East Side Fiber Artists group, will open Saturday, March 14.
A fiber arts exhibit isn’t just about works created out of cloth, said Beverly Abell, leader of the city of Tyler Main Street Department.
“The definition of fiber art is actually quite broad,” Abell said. “When one reads the guidelines for entering our exhibit jury process, one will find that fiber art includes traditional materials, but also traditional techniques with non-traditional materials such as wire or metal. Also traditional materials such as fiber can be treated in unusual ways such as in a collage or three-dimensional sculptures.”
Complete guidelines for the entry process are at the gallery’s website, www.DowntownTylerArts.com.
Gallery Main Street, operated by the city of Tyler Main Street Department in cooperation with the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition and Heart of Tyler, opened in 2009. Every eight weeks, the gallery features a new art exhibit.
Artwork is selected for exhibit via juried process. Artists submit digital images of their work for consideration by a jury, which scores each piece based on its own merits of skill in execution and adherence to theme. The top-scoring pieces are accepted for exhibit, and the piece that receives the highest score is named Best in Show.
The gallery’s exhibit schedule for 2015 may be found at the Main Street Department’s website. Prospectuses for other upcoming exhibits are posted at www.DowntownTylerArts.com.
