City of Longview website down again due to hack

TYLER (KYTX)- The City of Longview has pulled the plug on its website due to recent cyber attacks.
The website was apparently hacked several times following the shooting of 17-year old Kristiana Coignard — Coignard is the teen killed at the Longview police station 10 days ago by police.
City administrators say this was the last resort.
“We chose to pull down our website Monday evening just after 6 pm,” said Shawn Hara, City Manager.
That decision came after city workers say they’d been getting too many user requests per second.
“We’d been experiencing some really heavy traffic. Really heavy cyber attack issues,” said Hara.
The cyber attacks began a few days after 17-year-old Kristiana Coignard was shot and killed after police say she attacked them in their lobby.
Later– a video was posted on the longview police department’s website by the group “anonymous” claiming to attack the city’s page.
“It’s one of those things where I can’t really go into more details on it and I can’t go into too much more of an inside description,” said Hara.
However, the city is saying it’s aware of the inconvenience this has created for site-users.
“Probably the biggest impact is that we’ve pulled down the ability to do online payments and those kinds of things and that’s something we’d done as a precaution last week,” said Hara.
“We realize that it’s going to be an inconvenience but we really felt like this was the best course of action at the moment,” said Hara.
People like Patton are saying they agree that this is the best form of action the city can take right now.
“With the website being down it is an inconvenience but better safe than sorry,” said Patton.
City officials say they are not sure when the site will be up and running. However, they do know that no one’s personal information has been obtained at this time.
