After a disappointing loss to rival Kilgore on Saturday, the Tyler Junior College Apaches were anxious to get back on the basketball court.

They did just that Tuesday afternoon with a game added to their schedule.

TJC used the contest to work on some plays and get young players some experience as the Apaches rolled to a 103-61 win over Irving CYM at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

The Apaches (17-6) return to Region XIV Conference play on Saturday, hosting Bossier Parish Community College. The contest has a 4 p.m. tipoff.

Every Apache scored and had a rebound.

Darryl Stewart led with 16 points, while Dale Jones (15) and Tyler Miller (14) followed. Levi Yancy and Faith Pope were also in double figures scoring with 10 points apiece.

Ikenna Okwarabizie led TJC with nine rebounds with John Paul adding eight.

Leslie Varner led the Yellowjackets (8-15) with 26 points. He also had seven rebounds.

Creating Young Minds is a non-profit organization, CYM coach Mathis Crowder said.

He added CYM awards partial scholarships based on character and education for attendance at Creating Young Minds Academy, which includes a prep basketball team and an AAU basketball team under the same name.

He added, CYM was created to help young men achieve success in life that otherwise would be unavailable to them.

“We focus on teaching, grooming, and developing young athletes into young men,” he said. “The objective is to teach these young men how to have a purpose in life, how to humble themselves, work hard and have good character.”

The team plays junior college teams as well as NAIA JV squads.
