HAWKINS — Jarvis Christian College announced Monday that Bill Duke, actor and film director, will visit its campus on Feb. 19 for a special screening of his film, “Dark Girls.”
The highly-acclaimed, NAACP Award–nominated documentary, “Dark Girls,” is a fascinating and controversial film that goes underneath the surface to explore the prejudices that dark-skinned women face throughout the world. It explores the roots of classism, racism and lack of self-esteem within a segment of cultures that span from America to the most remote corners of the globe. Women share their personal stories, touching on deeply ingrained beliefs and attitudes of society, while allowing generations to heal as they learn to love themselves for who they are.
Immediately follow the screening, there will be an open dialogue in which the audience will be asked to share their thoughts and impressions about the movie and the topic of dark-skinned women.
Duke and Dr. Glenell Lee-Pruitt, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Jarvis Christian College, will lead the discussion.
Duke will then personally autograph copies of his book, “Dark Girls”, a photo book that celebrates dark-skinned women.
DVD copies of the movie “Dark Girls” will be available for purchase.
The screening will begin 6:30 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium in the Charles A. Meyer Science and Mathematics Center. Popcorn, candy and beverages will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public.
Jarvis Christian College is the sole historically Black liberal arts, baccalaureate degree-granting institution affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
